Kenyan and U.S. forces conduct first joint base defense exercise at Manda Bay
Kenyan and U.S. military forces have completed their first combined, installation-wide base defense exercise at Manda Bay, Kenya. While the two nations have conducted joint training previously, this event marked the first time they achieved complete cross-functional integration, involving multiple branches of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) alongside U.S. personnel.
The exercise focused on testing the ability of combined forces to detect, assess, and respond to threats against the strategic coastal facility. Training scenarios included mortar counterfire, emergency response and recovery operations, and drills regarding suspicious persons or activities.
A primary goal of the exercise was to identify coordination gaps caused by differing standard operating procedures (SOPs) between the two militaries. The facility at Manda Bay serves as a critical location for supporting counter-terrorism operations across East Africa, specifically targeting extremist groups such as al-Shabaab.
