Kenyan banks report strong half-year 2026 profits

Major Kenyan banks have reported strong financial results for the first half of 2026.

Co-operative Bank of Kenya recorded a profit after tax of KSh18 billion, representing a 28% increase from KSh14.1 billion in the same period in 2025. The bank's total assets grew by 7.1% to KSh869.5 billion, while net loans and advances rose by 18.1% to KSh462.2 billion. Managing Director and CEO Dr. Gideon Muriuki noted that the performance is part of the group's “Soaring Eagle” Transformation Agenda, highlighting an improved non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 13.9%.

Consolidated Bank of Kenya saw a significant surge in profitability, with net profit after tax rising 1,349.5% to Sh174.83 million. This growth was driven by increased interest and non-interest income, with total operating income rising 28.3% to Sh1.07 billion. While customer deposits grew by 13% to Sh13.57 billion, the bank faced challenges with asset quality, as gross non-performing loans increased by 12.5% to Sh4.27 billion.
