Kenyan counties Nyeri and Mombasa expand healthcare workforces

Two Kenyan counties are significantly expanding their public sector workforces, with a primary focus on the healthcare sector.

Nyeri County has announced the recruitment of over 140 permanent and pensionable positions. The majority of these vacancies are within the health department, including 59 registered nurses, medical laboratory technologists, pathologists, and various medical and dental officers. Other openings include roles in finance, agriculture, and livestock departments. The Nyeri County Public Service Board emphasized that recruitment will be merit-based and warned the public against fraudulent schemes demanding payment for employment.

Mombasa County has completed the recruitment of 286 new health workers to support its expanding medical infrastructure. Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir stated that the appointments are part of a sustainable transformation of the local healthcare system. This workforce expansion coincides with the construction and upgrading of several facilities, including Mjambere Level 3 Hospital, Likoni Mother and Child Hospital, and new specialized units at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, such as a cancer centre and a children’s intensive care unit.
