Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki Travels to Uganda for AUSSOM Security Summit
Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki departed Nairobi on the morning of 31 July 2026 aboard a Kenya Air Force aircraft, accompanied by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, to represent President William Ruto at the second Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Entebbe, Uganda. The high‑level meeting gathered heads of state and senior officials from Somalia, Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Egypt and regional bodies including the AU, UN and IGAD to review the mission’s mandate, which expires at the end of 2026, and to discuss Somalia’s security and counter‑terrorism efforts.
A key agenda item is the impending withdrawal of United States financial and logistical support after 31 December 2026, prompting participants to explore alternative funding mechanisms and operational continuity plans. Kindiki’s attendance underscores Kenya’s continued diplomatic commitment to regional stability despite domestic political debates.
