Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi Sets New 1000m World Record in Monaco

Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the 21‑year‑old Kenyan Olympic and world 800 m champion, broke the men’s 1000 m world record at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, running 2:11.83. The performance shaved 0.13 seconds off Noah Ngeny’s 1999 mark that had stood for 27 years. It was Wanyonyi’s first race over the distance. He earned $60,000 in prize money – $10,000 for the win and $50,000 for the record – plus a Kenyan government bonus of five million shillings, bringing his total earnings to roughly 12.8 million shillings. President William Ruto and senior Kenyan officials praised the achievement. Great Britain’s Jake Wightman finished second in 2:12.77, moving to fifth on the all‑time list, while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati took third. The race featured a fast early pace set by Poland’s Patryk Sieradzki and France’s Louey Ouerrat.
