Kenyan former gender minister Aisha Jumwa quits UDA party

Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa announced she has left President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) with immediate effect. In a press briefing she said the decision came after “deep reflection, heartfelt prayer and countless consultations with the people I serve,” and added, “From today, Aisha Jumwa Katana is no longer a member of the United Democratic Alliance.”

Jumwa, who was ousted from her ministerial post and claims she was humiliated by the president, cited betrayal and frustration over her ambition to contest the Kilifi gubernatorial seat. Her exit joins a wave of departures from the ruling party ahead of future electoral contests, though she did not specify her next political affiliation.
