Kenyan MP John Kaguchia Arrested Over Rally Remarks Amid Political Tension
Member of Parliament John Kaguchia was taken into custody by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday after remarks he made at a public rally in Kieni, Nyeri County were deemed potentially inflammatory. He had spent the night at Royal Media Services (RMS) headquarters following an appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme, and was arrested from the RMS premises before being transferred to DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning.
Kaguchia said he had not received a formal summons and posted on social media that a contingent of heavily armed, hooded men in unmarked vehicles had surrounded RMS and erected roadblocks in an attempt to arrest him. He warned voters against supporting President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election during the rally.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua condemned the arrest, calling it a misuse of the criminal justice system to persecute political rivals and saying it would only strengthen Kaguchia’s support among leaders from the Mount Kenya region. Kaguchia’s legal team has sought his release on bond.
