Kenyan national to be extradited to US for manslaughter conviction
A Kenyan national, Sancho Kibutu, is set to be extradited to the United States to face sentencing for a fatal drunk-driving incident in California. Kibutu appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Teresia Nyangena at the Milimani Law Courts, where he accepted the extradition request and agreed to comply with court orders.
Kibutu was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, a violation of the California Penal Code, along with three special allegations. He has been at large since October 2013, after failing to appear for sentencing in Madera County, California.
The extradition follows a formal request from both the Kenyan and United States governments. The Director of Public Prosecutions noted that the case underscores the importance of international cooperation in ensuring individuals wanted for criminal offenses are held accountable in the jurisdictions where the crimes occurred.
