Kenyan police investigate suspected suicide of Rwandan priest in Nairobi

Police in Nairobi are investigating the suspected suicide of Rev. Fr. Alex Kalemba Mutahingwa, a 71-year-old Rwandan Catholic priest. He was discovered hanging in his room at the Apostles of Jesus Seminary along Lang’ata Road on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Authorities reported that a note was left at the scene, and a notebook containing family contacts and a passport was recovered. The body has been moved to the Montezuma Funeral Home pending a postmortem examination.

The Apostles of Jesus missionary institute expressed mourning for the deceased, noting his significant contributions to the formation of priests and his work in preserving the institute’s historical archives. Fr. Mutahingwa had served as a Spiritual Director at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary in Nairobi and had previously studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
