William Ruto navigates shifting political alliances ahead of 2027 election

Kenya's political landscape is shifting ahead of the 2027 General Election as President William Ruto engages in various strategic maneuvers. Ruto reported that he attempted to involve former President Uhuru Kenyatta in shaping a national vision, though he claimed Kenyatta was reluctant and chose to remain in opposition politics.

In a significant regional shift, Ruto has formed a formal coalition with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to target Nyanza, where he currently holds 28% support. The alliance faces challenges regarding power-sharing demands, including the deputy presidency. Meanwhile, in the Mt Kenya region, Ndindi Nyoro has departed from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to lead the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), creating new competition for regional influence.

Regarding leadership stability, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced his interest in a 2032 presidential bid while affirming his support for Ruto in 2027. He clarified he is not seeking the running mate position. Additionally, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has vowed to defend his seat, asserting his position is secure.
