Kenyan Premier League playoff abandoned after referee assault
A Football Kenya Federation Premier League promotion/relegation playoff match between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United was abandoned on Tuesday following an assault on referee John Sulwe. The incident occurred at the Ulinzi Complex Stadium during the 66th minute of the return leg.
The chaos was triggered when Sulwe awarded a penalty to Mombasa United. Kariobangi Sharks players protested the decision, leading to physical confrontations. The situation escalated as supporters invaded the pitch, chasing Sulwe and subjecting him to physical strikes and being pushed. Security personnel eventually intervened to escort the official to safety.
At the time of abandonment, Kariobangi Sharks led 2-1, making the aggregate score 3-3. The final outcome of the playoff, which determines whether Sharks retain top-flight status or Mombasa United earns promotion, now rests with the FKF Disciplinary Committee.
