Kenyan Senator Edwin Sifuna Challenges President Ruto Over Affordable Housing and Job Policies

Senator Edwin Sifuna publicly rebuked President William Ruto after the president mocked the feasibility of keeping chickens in high‑rise affordable‑housing apartments, questioning the practicality of the programme. Sifuna reiterated his opposition to the Affordable Housing Programme, arguing that Kenya needs improvements in healthcare, education and basic services before investing in large‑scale housing projects, and he warned that voting for opposition parties in the 2027 general election would be a “biggest accident”.

In a separate address, Sifuna also criticized Ruto’s “Kazi ni Kazi” mantra, sharing a 2010 personal story of rising from a matatu ride to owning a car after joining a law firm, and arguing that jobs must provide real advancement and fair wages. He warned that heavy taxation deters investors and jeopardises youth employment, noting the president’s recent claim that 30,000 youths secured internships under the Next Generation of Kenya Youth Employment Programme, with plans to reach 100,000 in three years.
