Kenya's Affordable Housing Programme Clarifies No Rental‑Only Units

Kenya's State Department for Housing and Urban Development confirmed that units under the Affordable Housing Programme are not offered for rental‑only occupancy. The programme is intended to promote homeownership through two pathways: the Tenant Purchase Scheme, which requires a five‑percent deposit and monthly payments until a Sectional Title Deed is issued, and outright purchase for buyers who can pay the full price upfront. Once ownership is transferred, homeowners may occupy, lease or otherwise use the property.

The clarification responded to a social‑media query and followed reports that contributors had withdrawn Ksh 2.56 billion from the scheme. Officials explained the figure reflects Boma Yangu savings being applied toward home purchases rather than a loss of confidence in the programme.

The department emphasized, “Kindly note that the Affordable Housing Programme is designed to support homeownership, not rental‑only occupancy.”
