Kenya's blue economy transforms coastal livelihoods

Coastal communities in Kenya are experiencing a shift in livelihoods due to increased government focus on the blue economy. Historically, residents have relied on traditional fishing, which has been hindered by declining fish stocks, damaged coral reefs, inadequate storage facilities, and low market prices.

New investments and infrastructure, such as the construction of the Shimoni Port, are diversifying economic opportunities. Beyond traditional fishing, residents are finding work in tourism, boat operations, passenger transport, and seaweed farming. Seaweed farming has become a notable source of income for women and young people, who process the seaweed into products like soap and oil.

Local residents note that these developments are helping to integrate remote areas like Shimoni into national development plans. There is a growing call for continued investment in infrastructure, including roads, electricity, schools, and hospitals, to further expand the ocean economy and create more sustainable jobs for the youth.
