Kenya political tensions rise amid Ruto-Kenyatta disputes

Political tensions in Kenya are escalating ahead of the 2027 General Election, characterized by sharp exchanges between President William Ruto and various opposition figures. President Ruto recently accused retired President Uhuru Kenyatta of being the ‘chief financier’ and ‘sponsor’ of opposition candidates in an attempt to sabotage his administration.

In response, the Jubilee Party and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have criticized the President. The Jubilee Party stated that the administration should focus on addressing the needs of Kenyans rather than campaigning against a retired leader. Gachagua, speaking from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters and a new office in Naivasha, urged Ruto to stop targeting Kenyatta and instead face him as a direct political competitor.

Gachagua also reported an attack on his convoy in Nakuru, alleging that organized goons used stones and axes to intimidate his team while police watched. Additionally, Senator John Methu has challenged the Ruto administration to publish a scorecard detailing the fulfillment of its 2022 campaign promises.

Separately, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has offered former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa the position of Deputy Party Leader, suggesting she would be a strong candidate for the Kilifi County governorship.
