Kenya's Ol Pejeta and Maasai Mara confront tourism‑driven conservation threats

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya’s Laikipia plateau is home to the last two northern white rhinos, mother Najin and daughter Fatu. After the death of the last male in 2018, the sanctuary has become a global symbol of the species’ near‑extinction, with scientists pursuing in‑vitro fertilisation to revive the subspecies. The reserve also protects a large population of black rhinos and relies on round‑the‑clock armed patrols and advanced monitoring to deter poaching.

In the neighbouring Maasai Mara, rapid expansion of luxury lodges such as the Ritz‑Carlton Maasai Mara Safari Camp has sparked a legal battle. Conservation groups have petitioned Kenya’s High Court to halt new tourism infrastructure that they say violates a 2023 moratorium and lacks proper environmental impact assessments. The petition targets several hotel chains, the Narok County government, the National Environment Management Authority and the Kenya Wildlife Service, warning that unchecked development threatens the iconic wildebeest migration corridor and the reserve’s ecological integrity.
