Kenya's Parliament reviews legislative backlog ahead of 2027 elections

The Kenyan National Assembly Liaison Committee has convened a strategic retreat in Mombasa to address a backlog of unfinished legislative and oversight business. Chaired by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, the committee is assessing ways to accelerate the work of parliamentary committees as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.

A primary focus of the retreat is managing the workload of oversight committees, specifically regarding the examination of government expenditure. To address this, lawmakers are considering the creation of additional accounts committees to expedite the scrutiny of public spending.

Additionally, the committee plans to engage with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) regarding preparations for the 2027 polls. Deputy Speaker Boss assured the commission that Parliament would support its funding requirements, which are essential for voter registration, election technology, logistics, and the procurement of election materials.
