Kenyatta Benjamin sentenced to 16 months for dangerous driving
Kenyatta Benjamin has been sentenced to 16 months in prison and received a four-year driving ban following a guilty plea for dangerous driving. The sentence stems from a 2022 collision on the Sir George Walter Highway that involved four cyclists during a training ride.
The crash resulted in the hospitalization of Sean Weathered, Ghere Coates, and Tiziano Rosignoli, all of whom were later discharged. However, national cyclist Andre Simon sustained severe head trauma and internal bleeding. After receiving extended care in an intensive care unit and being flown to the United States for treatment, Simon died approximately 13 months after the incident.
Benjamin was not charged with causing death by dangerous driving because, under Antigua and Barbuda law, a victim must die within one year and one day of the incident for that specific charge to apply. The High Court's ruling brings the dangerous driving case to a conclusion.
