Kenzo the Bengal tiger dies after failed capture operation in Mexico

Kenzo, a captive Bengal tiger, escaped from the Animal Experience facility in Tepetlaoxtoc, State of Mexico, on 27 June 2026. A five‑day search involving municipal, state and federal authorities used drones, trackers and a capture team. During the operation veterinarians attempted to sedate the animal with tranquilizer darts, but Kenzo attacked a horse and later a woman/veterinarian, prompting security forces to fire lethal shots. The tiger died while being transported to a sanctuary.

Mexico’s environmental agency PROFEPA confirmed the death, ordered the temporary closure of the Animal Experience premises, and launched an investigation. It also announced that UNAM specialists performed a necropsy, with preliminary results expected in early July. The incident sparked criticism over the lack of certified wildlife‑handling veterinarians and contradictory statements from the local mayor and federal officials.
