KEOSOE warns of wine fraud and lack of oversight in Greece
The Hellenic Confederation of Wine Cooperatives (KEOSOE) has issued a warning regarding the upcoming grape harvest. While grape production is expected to return to normal levels with excellent quality, the organization expressed concern over a lack of oversight regarding the movement of wine.
KEOSOE reports that illegal wine movement reaches approximately 60% in major urban consumer centers. In island regions, wines from different origins are reportedly being sold as local products. Furthermore, the organization claims that imported wines are being circulated as Greek products at extremely low prices due to insufficient inspections.
While the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) conducts numerous checks in tourist areas, KEOSOE notes a lack of basic inspections regarding the origin of wines as required by law. The cooperative organizations have stated they will work to support producers and maintain price stability to ensure the sector's sustainability.
