Kepulauan Meranti village elections face delays due to candidate shortages
The 2026 simultaneous village head elections (Pilkades) in Kepulauan Meranti Regency face potential delays due to a shortage of candidates. Out of the 12 villages scheduled for elections this year, three villages—Insit, Beting, and Tanjung Kulim—currently have only one candidate each, failing to meet the minimum requirement of two candidates.
Aminullah, Head of the Village Government Division at the Meranti Regency Community Empowerment and Village Office, stated that while five villages previously required registration extensions, two villages (Dwitunggal and Tanjung Medang) have since met the minimum candidate requirement. This brings the total number of villages ready to proceed with the election stages to nine. The remaining three villages must wait until the registration extension period ends on August 22, 2026, to determine if additional candidates will emerge.
