Kepulauan Riau authorities strengthen measures against smuggling

Authorities in the Kepulauan Riau province are intensifying efforts to prevent the smuggling of illegal goods and chemicals. PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) in Tanjungpinang has tightened inspections for cargo being sent to various islands via the KM Sabuk Nusantara pioneer ship. All goods must undergo detailed verification and possess proper quarantine documentation before being permitted for transport.

In a separate security initiative, the Kepulauan Riau Regional Police (Polda Kepri) have partnered with Interpol for the Chemical Anti-Smuggling Enforcement (CHASE) operation. This collaboration focuses on investigating and eradicating the smuggling of chemicals that could be used to manufacture explosives or narcotics. The operation aims to address cross-border crimes, including terrorism, illegal mining, and the use of explosives in fishing practices, through enhanced data exchange and international coordination.
