Kerala aims to resolve power crisis within one week

Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has expressed optimism that the state's ongoing power crisis will be resolved within a week. The government is currently negotiating with several other states and power companies to secure additional electricity.

Recent procurement efforts include 150 MW from Odisha and 150 MW from the Nuclear Power Corporation Limited (NPCIL). The Chief Minister noted that contact has been made with eight states to mitigate the shortage. The crisis has been driven by increased consumption—up 925 MW compared to the same period last year—alongside rising temperatures, insufficient rainfall, and a lack of storage facilities for solar energy.

To address both immediate and long-term needs, the government plans to introduce a new revised electricity policy and a strategic plan covering the period from October 1 through the next monsoon season. The administration is also seeking long-term power purchase agreements, noting that a previous 25-year agreement at 29 rupees per unit had been canceled without an immediate replacement.
