Battery Energy Storage Projects Accelerate in India, Germany and Asia

India is boosting battery storage to ease power deficits. Kerala’s electricity minister said the state faces a 900 MW shortfall and will fast‑track six Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, five of which are slated for completion by end‑2026 with about 1,500 MW of storage. Maharashtra’s distribution utility MSEDCL has issued a tender for a 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh BESS to be built across several substations.

In Europe, Germany sees two major developments: BW ESS has broken ground on the 1 GW/5.7 GWh Klostermansfeld BESS, the country’s largest battery storage facility, while Canadian‑backed Eku Energy has acquired a 1.6 GWh BESS project in Lower Saxony that will provide black‑start capability and improve grid resilience. Jinko ESS and Taliva Energy have signed contracts for a 400 MWh portfolio of utility‑scale storage projects in Eastern Europe.

Globally, the market is expanding rapidly. Tesla delivered 13.5 GWh of energy‑storage systems in Q2 2026, a 53 % quarterly rise. Saudi Arabia’s power procurement agency has shortlisted nine Chinese firms for a 12 GWh BESS programme, and companies such as Alsym Energy and Great Power are securing multi‑gigawatt orders worldwide.
