Kerala Assembly resolution to remove CEC allegedly originated from opposition
CPI(M) leader and former Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal has claimed that the Kerala Legislative Assembly resolution seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar was originally proposed by the Leader of the Opposition. Balagopal stated that the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) government later adopted the proposal and presented it as an official government resolution.
The resolution, which was passed in the assembly with amendments, alleges irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. It claims that technical manipulations and irregularities in the revision process put the voting rights of marginalized communities, minorities, migrant workers, and young voters at risk.
Additionally, the resolution cites reports that the Election Commission curtailed the powers of Electoral Registration Officers regarding voter list preparation through software systems and amended Form 6 in violation of existing rules. The assembly is calling for corrective measures to rectify these alleged irregularities and for changes to the panel responsible for appointing Election Commissioners.
