Kerala CM VD Satheesan calls for social media accountability

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan has called for increased accountability on social media, warning that individuals, including those with good reputations, can be targeted by smear campaigns. Speaking at an event in Thrissur, Satheesan noted that the lack of regulation allows anyone to publish content without consequence.

Satheesan also criticized mainstream media for failing to uphold professional standards. He observed that while traditional newspapers historically provided corrections for errors, modern media outlets often continue broadcasting incorrect narratives for extended periods without expressing regret. He emphasized that the issue is not legitimate criticism, but rather “ugly and irresponsible journalism” that lacks dignity and accountability, particularly noting that women are frequently targets of online attacks.
