Kerala government hosts midnight event to promote women's safety

The Kerala government held a ‘Freedom at Midnight’ event in Thiruvananthapuram to promote women's empowerment and their right to use public spaces safely at night. Organized by the Women and Child Development Department, the initiative took place on the night of August 14 as part of Independence Day celebrations.

During the event, a specific stretch of the capital was opened exclusively to women between 10 pm and 1 am. The program included a night walk inaugurated by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, moving from Palayam Junction to Statue Junction. The area featured street games, cycling, cultural performances, music, and a night market showcasing products from women entrepreneurs. Women were also responsible for security, crowd management, and event coordination.

The initiative has sparked debate regarding its long-term impact. While supporters view it as a positive step toward inclusivity and safety, some critics argue the event is merely symbolic. Some observers suggest that true safety requires systemic changes, such as increasing the presence of women police officers, improving women-friendly public transport, and addressing patriarchal prejudices, rather than temporary segregation of public spaces.
