Kerala government advances AIIMS site identification and addresses power shortages

The Kerala state government is accelerating efforts to establish the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by identifying suitable locations. Health Minister K Muralidharan stated that approximately 10 potential sites across various districts have been shared with the Union Health Minister. The government is currently reviewing feasibility reports for these sites, which must meet central criteria including at least 200 acres of contiguous, dispute-free land and proximity to major transport hubs.

Separately, Kerala is facing a significant power shortage driven by a sharp rise in electricity consumption. Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph reported that demand has surged from projected levels of 4,200 MW to nearly 6,000 MW, fueled by increased use of air conditioners and electric vehicles. The state is currently procuring electricity at high rates from Himachal Pradesh and is exploring alternative sources and long-term procurement strategies to reduce costs.

In Malappuram, the district has launched the central government’s SMILE scheme. This initiative, managed by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to rehabilitate individuals engaged in begging by providing skill training and alternative livelihood opportunities rather than direct monetary assistance.
