Kerala government to regulate spas amid exploitation and fraud reports
The Kerala government is planning to introduce legislation to regulate the spa sector following reports of sexual exploitation and financial fraud. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced that authorities have been conducting statewide raids, dubbed ‘Operation Spa’, to identify and shut down illegal establishments.
The crackdown follows specific incidents, including the sexual assault of a minor in Kovalam and an alleged gang rape in Kochi. Officials noted that many spas operate under the Shops and Establishments Act without complying with necessary legal requirements, leading to a lack of clarity regarding ownership and activities.
Complaints indicate that women are being recruited from both within and outside the state to be exploited. Additionally, customers have reported being victims of fraudulent practices. While the minister acknowledged that some spas operate legitimately, he warned that establishments violating the law will face closure and strict legal action.
