Kerala High Court quashes decision to abolish police association

The Kerala High Court has quashed a decision by the State government to dissolve the Kerala Police Officers Association (KPOA). The ruling came in response to challenges against a July 2026 government order aimed at restructuring police associations by reorganizing three different bodies representing various ranks.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas ruled that the State lacked the authority to restructure the associations in this manner, noting that the decision interfered with the constitutional rights of police officers. The court emphasized that the freedom to form associations under Article 19(1)(c) of the Constitution includes the right to preserve the association and its composition once it has been established and recognized.
