Kerala infrastructure: High-speed rail and airport ropeway proposals
Infrastructure development in Kerala is facing new proposals and discussions regarding connectivity. E. Sreedharan, known as the ‘Metro Man’, expressed optimism that the state government will eventually approve a high-speed rail project. While the previous administration’s K-Rail/SilverLine proposal was shelved due to political and public opposition, Sreedharan has submitted a separate proposal for a high-speed rail corridor, citing the high demand for faster transit as seen in the popularity of Vande Bharat trains.
In a separate development regarding Kochi, a consortium of residents has proposed an urban ropeway as a more cost-effective alternative to extending the Kochi Metro to the airport. The proposal suggests that a ropeway could connect a metro station near the airport roundabout directly to the terminals. Proponents argue that a ropeway would require lower capital and operating costs compared to metro construction and could utilize the airport’s solar-generation capacity to reduce its energy footprint.
