Kerala rain: Landslides and flash floods cause multiple deaths
Heavy monsoon rains in Kerala have triggered a series of deadly landslides and flash floods, resulting in at least 10 deaths across districts including Idukki, Kottayam, and Malappuram.
In Malappuram, a flash flood in the Kottappuzha River swept away a group of people near TK Colony; search operations successfully recovered six bodies. In Idukki, a landslide at Kottakamboor destroyed a temporary shed, killing two people and injuring another. In Kottayam, a landslide near Teekoy killed a woman from Tamil Nadu and injured her companion.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur, forecasting continued heavy rainfall. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has ordered hourly weather assessments and directed the deployment of special disaster management teams. The state government is also working toward a new district-level disaster management model to improve preparedness against highly localized weather events.
