Kerala launches probe into failed Messi and Argentina football visit

The Kerala government has established a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged financial irregularities and unpaid Goods and Services Tax (GST) related to a failed plan to bring Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team to the state.

The investigation focuses on claims that approximately ₹216 crore was transferred abroad via a US intermediary, with authorities identifying a potential GST liability of ₹22.68 crore. Investigators will scrutinize the financial transactions, bank records, and administrative decisions involving the Reporter Broadcasting Company.

While a private partner claimed large sums were transferred to the Argentina Football Association (AFA), investigators have reportedly found no bank documentation to confirm these transfers. Furthermore, officials noted that a commercial brochure from the AFA may have been used as an official commitment to secure necessary approvals, rather than a legally binding tripartite agreement between the state government, the AFA, and sponsors. Lionel Messi is not accused of any wrongdoing in the matter.
