Kerala Launches Self‑Enumeration Phase of India's Digital Census 2027

Kerala began the self‑enumeration phase of India's first fully digital Census 2027 on June 16. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan were the first to submit their details through the Census portal, marking the formal start of public participation in the state. The launch event was held at Lok Bhavan, with the chief minister completing his entry later at the Mascot Hotel.

The 15‑day self‑enumeration window allows residents to enter household, occupation and living‑standard information online, which will later be verified by enumerators during the house‑listing phase that starts on July 1. Around 10,000 supervisors and a cadre of teachers and government staff have been mobilised to support data collection. Similar self‑enumeration phases are underway or scheduled in other Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and West Bengal, each following distinct timelines.

The digital census aims to improve the accuracy of welfare‑targeting and development planning across the country, building on a statistical exercise that dates back to 1872.
