Kerala Lottery to Expand ₹5,000 Prizes and Boost Ticket Prints

The Kerala state government is preparing a major overhaul of its lottery system. Under the proposal, the number of ₹5,000 prize winners would rise from about 20,520 to 22,680 by increasing the weekly draws for that prize category from 19 to 21. At the same time, the volume of tickets printed for non‑bumper draws could grow from roughly 1.08 crore to 1.17 crore, a move intended to make the lottery more attractive and raise state revenue.

The existing lottery scheme includes multiple prize structures—such as Fifty‑Fifty, Win‑Win, and various bumper draws—offered through authorized retailers only; online sales are prohibited and subject to legal action. Winners have 30 % tax deducted from prizes, while agents receive a 10 % commission. The lottery remains a significant source of income for Kerala, providing both entertainment and earnings for millions of residents.
