Kerala orders Vigilance probe into Mundamveli housing project
The Kerala state government has ordered a Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) inquiry into alleged irregularities regarding the construction of the Mundamveli apartment complex in Kochi. Built under the LIFE Mission housing scheme, the complex was intended to rehabilitate 77 families from the flood-prone P&T Colony.
Residents have reported severe structural and sanitary issues, including sewage leakage, water seeping through walls, dampness, cracks, and electrical hazards. Chief Minister V D Satheesan previously noted that the defects might be so extensive that the buildings could require demolition, as repairing them may cost more than new construction.
The probe, sanctioned under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, will investigate the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the Thrissur District Labour Contract Cooperative Society. Investigators will examine construction quality, project changes, expenditures, and the clearances issued by GCDA engineers.
