Kerala police accused of assaulting Dalit youth during theft probe
The family of a Dalit youth named Abhilash has accused the Erattupetta police in Kerala’s Kottayam district of assaulting him during an investigation into suspected electricity wire theft. Abhilash was taken from his home in Peringalam, Poonjar, on October 23 to record a statement regarding the theft of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) wires.
Abhilash’s brother, Vineesh, alleged that police personnel assaulted the youth at their home and inside a vehicle, claiming he was slapped and hit on his head and legs. The family also alleged that the officers failed to identify themselves and used abusive language. Following his release from the police station, Abhilash reported weakness and headaches, leading to his admission at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam.
Deputy Superintendent of Police T. M. Varghese has denied the allegations of custodial assault, stating that Abhilash was summoned solely to provide information regarding the theft investigation. A complaint has been filed with the Pala Deputy Superintendent of Police, and a report is expected to be submitted to the Scheduled Castes Development Department.
