Kerala registers no UAPA cases in first five months of 2026

Kerala recorded no cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the first five months of 2026, the first time the state has logged a zero count in a decade. Data presented in the state assembly show a steady drop from 32 cases in 2023 to five in 2024 and three in 2025, reaching zero by May 31, 2026. Officials said the decline reflects a genuine reduction in offences linked to terrorist and Maoist groups, whose operational capacity has weakened since a peak around 2016. The Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) P. Vijayan attributed the trend to coordinated multi‑agency operations with neighboring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, welfare initiatives in tribal areas, and continuous surveillance by the state intelligence and anti‑terrorism squads. Justice P. S. Gopinathan, chair of the UAPA Review Authority, said the figures demonstrate effective policing and the shrinking reach of banned organisations.
