Kerala University proposes restrictions on campus political activities

Kerala University has proposed draft guidelines to strictly regulate student political activities across its colleges and departments. The measures, which follow directions from the Kerala High Court and the university Chancellor, aim to maintain peace on campuses by prohibiting protests, sit-ins, blockades, and the use of political slogans in classrooms and offices.

Under the proposed rules, political campaigning via digital media would be banned, and events featuring individuals with an “anti-national background” could be barred. Students found in violation could face disciplinary actions ranging from warnings and fines of at least Rs 5,000 to suspension or expulsion. Additionally, political parties could be fined Rs 10,000 for violations.

The proposals have faced criticism from various political parties and student organizations, who have labeled the move as undemocratic. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal clarified that the guidelines are currently in the draft stage and are intended to ensure a peaceful campus atmosphere rather than a total ban on student politics.
