Keratsini‑Drapetsona Mayor Christos Vrettakos Faces Fire‑Safety Probe and Fines

Following a wave of citizen complaints, the public prosecutor ordered inspections of fire‑protection systems in schools, kindergartens, sports facilities and other municipal buildings in the Keratsini‑Drapetsona municipality. Fire‑service teams discovered systematic gaps, including the complete absence of fire‑detection and suppression equipment in several primary schools and nurseries, and numerous violations in the municipal headquarters.

Administrative penalties were imposed: €7,171 for the affected schools and nurseries and a €41,250 fine for the town hall. The prosecutor’s inquiry now includes the mayor, Christos Vrettakos, and the deputy mayors for possible offences such as endangering public safety and dereliction of duty. The issue was raised in the municipal council on 6 May 2026, where the mayor acknowledged that active fire‑protection does not function in all schools. Similar safety concerns were reported for the Antoni Samarakis Cultural Center. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
