Kercova sewage treatment failures pollute Zajaz River

Unprocessed sewage is frequently being discharged into the Zajaz River, a major branch of the Treska River, due to recurring failures in the Kercova sewage filtration and treatment collector. The issue was identified during a routine inspection by the Hanter Fish Sports Fishing Association.

Besmir Elezi, a river concessionaire in Kercova, reported the situation to the environmental inspectorate, noting that this is a recurring problem despite previous attempts to find a solution. He warned that the pollution poses a severe risk to the environment and water quality, particularly as low water levels caused by drought increase the concentration of ammonia and impurities. Elezi expressed concern that future heavy rainfall could stir up these contaminants, potentially killing aquatic life.

Local residents continue to pay for sewage treatment services despite these systemic failures. There are urgent calls for competent institutions to intervene, functionalize the treatment system, and stop the ongoing pollution.
