Kericho Governor Erick Mutai sued for child support
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is facing a legal battle after a fourth-year student at the University of Kabianga, Maureen Chepkirui, filed a lawsuit seeking child maintenance and alleging parental neglect.
Chepkirui is demanding KSh 200,000 in monthly child support for their one-year-old daughter. The petitioner alleges that the governor has abandoned his parental duties and has refused to provide financial, emotional, or general upkeep for the minor.
The lawsuit also addresses a dispute regarding the child's legal identity. Chepkirui claims that Governor Mutai has withheld his national identity card, which is required to register the child's birth certificate with the father's details included. She argues this prevents the child from having a legal identity.
In addition to monthly maintenance, the legal team is seeking to compel the governor to provide his identification details, purchase a comprehensive medical insurance policy for the child, and pay KSh 200,000 in exemplary damages for constitutional violations.
