Kern Mattes S/A ordered to pay R$ 7.8 million for Rio dos Sinos fish kill

A court has ordered the bankrupt estate of the tannery Kern Mattes S/A and two former directors to pay millions in compensation for a massive environmental disaster in the Rio dos Sinos. The ruling follows a 2006 incident that resulted in the death of approximately 86 tons of fish across at least 16 species.

The total compensation includes R$ 7,870,824.02 for environmental material damages, calculated based on technical studies regarding ecological services and animal reproduction impacts, plus R$ 500,000 for collective moral damages. The funds are intended for environmental recovery projects and funds established by the Civil Public Action Law.

The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) initiated several legal actions to address the tragedy, seeking both criminal responsibility and environmental reparation. The convicted parties will be held jointly liable for the payments.
