Kern River rescue saves woman from deadly rapids
First responders from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit rescued a woman who fell into the fast‑moving Kern River near the Sierra Nevada foothills. A helicopter located the victim clinging to the base of a steep cliff, and crews on the ground threw a life jacket and a flotation rope, pulling her safely to shore before she received medical evaluation.
Officials warned that the Kern River poses extreme hazards, with strong currents, cold water temperatures and submerged rocks that can quickly overwhelm swimmers, even experienced ones. Visitors are advised to wear personal flotation devices when near the water.
