Gibran Rakabuming Raka visits NTT earthquake victims to oversee relief
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka visited earthquake-stricken areas in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Thursday to oversee disaster relief efforts following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake. During his visit to Sikka Regency, Gibran inspected evacuation centers at Gelora Samador Stadium and Wairklau Elementary School, meeting with displaced residents and providing baby supplies to vulnerable families. He emphasized that emergency response must prioritize the safety and urgent needs of citizens, particularly those in hard-to-reach mountainous areas, the elderly, children, and pregnant women.
As of August 19, 2026, the National Disaster Countermeasure Agency (BNPB) reported 71 deaths and approximately 59,647 evacuees across NTT, with the highest concentration in Manggarai District. The government has allocated approximately Rp44 billion for emergency response, and significant logistics, including 398 tons of aid, have been distributed via air and land. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin also traveled to Flores to meet with victims and deliver aid, representing President Prabowo Subianto's condolences.
In addition to medical and food assistance, the government is deploying trauma healing services for victims. Health facilities have activated nine Health Emergency Operation Centers to coordinate medical responses and monitor the situation on the ground.
