Kesennuma company amu launches uniforms made from upcycled fishing nets

Kesennuma-based company amu has launched ‘amuca Uniform’, a line of corporate apparel featuring fabric made from upcycled discarded fishing nets. The ‘amuca Fabric’ used in the pockets consists of 49% recycled yarn from domestic fishing nets and 51% recycled nylon. To promote transparency, a QR code on the tag allows users to trace the origin and manufacturing process of the nets used.

Addressing the issue of ‘ghost gear’—fishing equipment that contributes to approximately 40% of marine plastic pollution—the initiative aims to transform environmental waste into a resource. The uniforms have already been adopted by organizations including the Sendai Umino-mori Aquarium and Ocean Eyes.

In a separate collaborative effort, UCC Group has partnered with amu and local Kesennuma fishermen to release the ‘Kesennuma Port Big Catch Prayer Departure Blend’. This coffee is designed to complement local seafood, such as shark heart (moukano-hoshi) and swordfish. The product is available in sets that include tote bags made from recycled fishing nets.
