Keszthely St. Michael Chapel Archaeological Open Day on July 28

An open‑day event will be held on Tuesday, 28 July 2026 at the St. Michael Chapel in Keszthely, Hungary, allowing the public to view the ongoing medieval excavation. Guided tours will run at 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00, during which archaeologist‑museum curator Orha Zoltán will present the latest findings, including 14th‑century Gothic frescoes and a rare medieval falconry painting. Participation is free, and limited parking is available near the site.

The chapel, originally a 13th‑century village church later rebuilt in Baroque style and adapted in the early 20th century as the burial place of Bishop Vaszary Kolos, is noted for its extensive medieval wall paintings—the largest surviving example in Hungary. Organisers invite visitors to learn how archaeologists uncover and interpret such historic structures.
