Kevin De Bruyne excels at Napoli after a year, faces criticism

Kevin De Bruyne joined Napoli on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 after leaving Manchester City. After a difficult start, his form improved following the November break, and he finished the season as Serie A’s leading assist‑provider. Under manager Massimiliano Allegri, De Bruyne is now a central figure in Napoli’s 4‑3‑3 system, with a contract running to 2027 and a salary reported between €5.5‑7 million plus performance bonuses.

Former university rector Guido Trombetti, speaking on Radio Napoli Centrale, called De Bruyne “old” and suggested he could retire, questioning the club’s €10 million wage bill for a player who recorded only two assists in his first year. Trombetti also criticised Napoli’s recent transfer policy and the management of Antonio Conte, urging a squad overhaul and warning of competition from Juventus and other rivals.
