CM Punk retains WWE Championship in Toronto after Sami Zayn interference

CM Punk retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens during a WWE SmackDown event at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada. The match concluded in controversy following interference from Sami Zayn. After a referee bump, Zayn attempted to convince Owens to use the championship belt as a weapon; when Owens refused, Zayn struck Owens with the title instead. This allowed Punk to secure the victory with a ‘Go To Sleep’ (GTS) maneuver. Following the match, Zayn continued his assault by attacking both Punk and Owens with the championship belt.

The event also featured significant developments in other storylines. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis issued an ultimatum to Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, warning that any physical contact between them before their scheduled match at Sunday Night’s Main Event would result in both men losing their future opportunities to compete for the WWE Championship. Additionally, Blake Monroe made her main roster in-ring debut, though the scheduled match against Giulia was disrupted by an ambush by Monroe.

CM Punk’s entrance included a custom hockey goalie mask designed by Jason Baker, which featured a tribute to Punk’s late dog, Larry, through the inclusion of actual paw prints on the side of the mask.
