Kevin Shaeffer, a native of Peters Township, reflected on the life-altering events of the September 11 terrorist attacks. At the time of the attacks, Shaeffer was working at the Pentagon, observing the events in New York City unfold from the Navy Command Center.

A recipient of the Purple Heart, Shaeffer survived injuries sustained during the attacks at the Pentagon. He was rescued from the burning building by Army Sgt. 1st Class Steve Workman, who was awarded the Soldier's Medal for the rescue.

Shaeffer, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a former championship soccer player for Peters Township, currently resides in San Diego. He and his wife, Blanca, remain dedicated supporters of the Pittsburgh Steelers and plan to attend the team's 2026 season opener at Acrisure Stadium.
